Rhytidectomy, also called a facelift, is a facial rejuvenation procedure that involves tightening, stretching the skin to give it firmness. With the passing of time the skin and muscles lose tone and elasticity so they tend to fall, and with this procedure this effect is corrected giving the skin a younger appearance.

The lifting technique consists of repositioning the muscular layers by removing the excess tissue through a small incision at the height of the temple that goes down the inside of the lines that exist in the ear and scalp, and they are therefore hidden and are practically imperceptible.
The facelift is always performed in the operating theatre in a hospital. Normally, the patient stays in the hospital the night after the surgery, being discharged the following day. It is usually carried out with general anaesthesia, although depending on the case it could be performed with local anaesthesia plus sedation. A cervicofacial (face and neck) lift usually takes 3 to 4 hours. If it is associated with other procedures the duration will be longer. The fat can be removed or liposuction can be performed around the neck and chin to improve the contour of the face, then the muscles are tightened and finally the skin. In the frontal facelift, the incision is made on the forehead, concealed behind or in front of the hair.
It is also possible to perform a mini-facelift of the lower third of the face to redefine the facial oval and eliminate the flaccidity of the chin area, and combine it with cheek lipotransfer to restore the volume lost with age.
Type of treatment: surgical.
Time for completion: entre 3-4 hours.
Hospitalisation: 1 night.
Recovery: 15-20 days.
There is usually discomfort after surgery, but it is easily relieved using the medication prescribed by the surgeon. It is normal for certain areas of the skin to remain dormant and for bruising to persist for 2 or 3 weeks. The head should remain elevated for a few days after surgery to decrease inflammation and the bandages are removed between the first and fifth day after the lift. A cold mask is also applied for the first few days to reduce discomfort and inflammation.
It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks, and to limit exposure to the sun for a few months. Most patients return to work between 10 and 15 days after surgery.
