The procedure

There are various ways to carry out a breast reduction but usually the incisions are made in the form of an anchor around the areola through which the excess skin, fat and breast skin is removed. Then the areola and the nipple are placed in their new position and in some cases, liposuction is used.

The operation usually lasts between 3 and 4 hours, a general anaesthetic is used and the patient usually spends 2-3 nights in hospital. After the operation, some drainage tubes are put in and the area is dressed with a compression bandage to aid recovery.

Type of procedure: surgical.
Length of procedure: approx. 3-4 hours.
Anaesthetic: general.
Hospitalisation: 1 night.
Recovery: 7 days.

After the operation, the patient may lose nipple sensitivity for a while. They can return to work about two weeks after the operation and lead a relatively normal life after 4-5 days.

Dr Carballeira will prescribe medication to get rid of any discomfort which could last a couple of weeks.
