Otoplasty is surgery that is performed to correct the size or to reposition the ears so that they are closer to the head and also to correct other types of less frequent deformities. It is a simple surgery, which is usually performed in children from 4 years of age onwards, but is also indicated for adults.
Corrects “sticking out” ears
Reduces the size of the ears
Improves the whole face
Can be performed on children
An otoplasty usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours, although in complex cases it may take longer, and the technique used will depend on the specific problem. Generally, general anaesthesia is used for children and anaesthesia with sedation for adults. It is performed by making a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the atrial cartilage, then it is sculpted and folded back and finally, the excess skin and cartilage is removed to leave it looking more natural. The scar resulting from otoplasty is concealed behind the ear and the procedure is usually applied to both ears for better symmetry.
At the first consultation, Dr. Alexo Carballeira, after evaluating the patient, will give them all the detailed information about the intervention, the preparation, and the postoperative period and will resolve all their doubts.
Type of treatment: surgical.
Time for completion: approx. 2 hours.
Anaesthesia: local plus sedation.
Hospitalisation: not required.
Recovery: 3 to 5 days.
Most patients, children and adults, are well within hours of surgery and do not require hospitalisation. An elastic band is placed around the head at the end of the surgery and during the first few days there may be minor discomfort. Most adults return to work within 5 days of surgery and children return to school in about 7 days as long as they are careful about physical activity.
Appreciable after removal of the bandage
In short, otoplasty is a very safe and simple procedure in expert hands with a high degree of satisfaction on the part of patients, since it not only corrects the problem, but also achieves a notable improvement of the face as a whole.
